Early Summer Fun

Friday, May 12, 2018

It seemed like winter was never going to end this year - not so much because of snow, but just cooler temperatures for most of the spring.  Well, summer weather arrived this weekend in full force and we took advantage!  We enjoyed an evening celebrating Paul's birthday and letting the kids play in the hose and with water balloons.
The water balloons were terrific.  You got a whole bunch of them on one straw-like thing and you could fill them all at once.  Then when they were full you just popped them off and they were all tied and ready to use.  I think we filled 100 balloons in about 2 minutes.  It was great!  Where have these been all my life??

Thrilled to have three more full months of this kind of summer fun to look forward to - and definitely more water balloons.  Next time, we're totally adding S'mores too...

Mt. Lebanon Competition

Saturday, May 5, 2018

This year we added a new competition to our schedule - Mt. Lebanon, just outside of Pittsburgh, PA.  This was Emily's coach's rink (Heidi) back in the day so we were thrilled to get to go check it out.  Emily competed in freeskate, jumps and compulsory moves.
First up, freeskate!  Emily skated a beautiful program and really focused on clean landings on all of her jumps.  When the results came in, she was second!

After freeskate it was time for compulsory moves.  This is usually a 1/2 ice event, but this facility had a little rink (in addition to the big rink) so she got to use the whole thing.  Kind of a neat change and it suited her because she won  her group.  Gold medal  for Emily!!!
After compulsory we had kind of a long break so we headed to a local mall area and had lunch at Red Robin and then went and did a little shopping.  We closed out our break at Dairy Queen and then headed back to the rink for jumps!

Jumps are her favorite so she was happy to get back to the rink and close out the competition.  She skated really well and managed to get third for her efforts.  Not too shabby for a competition weekend.
All the CFSC skaters at Mt. Lebanon!
Then it was time for the REALLY fun part.  On our way home we stopped at the Poky Dot in Fairmont.  It is a very eclectic little place best know for its over-the-top ice cream creations.  We all went as a surprise for Amanda's (Emily's other coach) birthday.  It meant not getting home until nearly midnight, but in the end it was worth it.  We might hit it up again sometime.

ACSI 2018

Friday, April 20, 2018

Emily was selected to participate again this year in the state-wide ACSI competition.  This year she participated in speech, art and social studies.  For speech, she recited her poem from drama - No Fun Being Young.  For art she submitted a photo of Cassie that she took over spring break at Grandma's house.  For social studies she submitted her Katherine Johnson tri-fold and gave her presentation.  I wasn't able to watch the social studies and speech competitions, but I did get to take a picture of her with her Cassie photo.
After waiting a few weeks for results, there was big school assembly to pass out the ratings.

And when all the ratings had been handed out, Emily ended up with three Superior ratings - one in each category!  She was thrilled and we are super proud of her hard work!
