New Dora Big Wheel

Uncle Charles and Aunt Alison got Emily a new Dora Big Wheel for her birthday and brought it to her this weekend in Martinsburg. She was very excited and could not wait to ride it. She has no trouble at riding it and can even pedal up hill pretty well. Her major accomplishment today was learning to turn the bike with the handles while pedaling with her feet. She had been standing up to turn it around. She loves racing mommy and daddy (mommy needs to race after all she ate this week) and riding down hill. A great gift for a great big 3 year old. Just ask her - she'll tell you she's "big to do that."

Cousin Jacob & Emily

One of the things I enjoyed most while we were in Martinsburg was watching Emily and Jacob play together. Jacob is 6 and a half, but he played so well with Emily. He shared toys with her, he played with her, he helped her learn to play with some of her new toys and he was very, very patient. I was very impressed. As you can see, Santa brought Emily and Jacob both a kalidescope. They liked looking at each other with them and also spinning them around to see the colors. They also played Matchbox cars together and Thomas trains. I wish they could get together more to play, but Laura, Andy and Jacob all live in Philadelphia which makes visits difficult. At least we have Christmas to look forward to every year.

Christmas in Martinsburg (Christmas #4)

On December 29, we flew from Dayton to Martinsburg to visit the whole Miller family. We visited Grandma and Grandad Miller, Aunt Laura, Uncle Andy, Cousin Jacob, Uncle Charles, Aunt Alison, Great Grandma Miller and Great Grandad Miller. And, Daddy finally got to meet us too! Emily received many, many gifts and loved them all:

Hi Ho Cherry O Game
Hula Hoop
Ziggity Video Game System
Purple Tennis Shoes
Jeans
Remote Control Car
Candy Land Game
Dora Big Wheel
Shopping Cart
Mailbox with letters
(And more I am probably forgetting)
She had one (well make that 4) amazing Christmas(es) and Mommy and Daddy have lots of happy memories (oh, and loads of our own gifts too). We are truly blessed.

Uncle Scott's Balloon Adventure

On our last full day visiting Grandma and Grandpa Heintz, Uncle Scott and Aunt Karen agreed to babysit for a little while so Grandma and Mommy could go out and do a little shopping together. Uncle Scott knew that Emily LOVED balloons, so he went and bought a little bag of balloons for her and blew them all up. You can see the result...a whole afternoon of fun with the balloons and Uncle Scott and Aunt Karen. Needless to say, she slept well that night!

Visit to Cincinnati

On December 27, 2010 we took Emily to Cincinnati to visit Grandpa Marshall. She had a great time and I think Grandpa did too. She took some presents to Grandpa and Grandpa even had presents for her (imagine that). In case you lost track, this would be Christmas #3 for her. Grandpa got her a Dora Bath Castle, a little dog that runs around in a cage and some Dora magnets. The castle was a big hit. She actually raked in 2 of these this Christmas and loves and plays with both! For lunch, we all went to Don Pablos for our traditional "Feliz Navidad" lunch. Emily packed in 2 hot dogs and more chips than I care to admit. Everyone had a great time. Merry Christmas Grandpa!

Christmas Morning at Grandma's

Christmas morning was quite and event at Grandma's house. Santa made another stop for Emily. She definitely was on the nice list - in case there was in any doubt. This time, Santa brought a Dora doll, a Little Einstein Golden Pyramid, Dora microphone, Dora dress-up clothes and so much more. These were just the Santa gifts. Aunt Ann and Jim are coming later this evening and we saved up some other gifts for her to open with them when the rest of the family finally opens their gifts. She had her fill this morning though, so much so that we had to have a little quiet time with a tv show (Dora, how did you know). Then by 12:30 she was telling me she was tired and wanted a nap. How often does that happen? So I would say she has had another great Christmas celebration!

Christmas Eve at Grandma Heintz's House

We had a very full Christmas already with all that we did at home, but on December 23, Mommy & Emily hopped on an airplane and headed back to Ohio to spend Christmas wit Grandma and Grandpa Heintz, Uncle Scott and Aunt Karen while Daddy worked. We had some difficulties with the flights. We left for Philadelphia 30 minutes late and arrived about 45 mintues late. That wiped out our layover completely and when we got off the plane our flight to Dayton was already boarding. The line to get on the little train to ride to the proper concourse was forever long. We finally got on about 10 minutes later and rode over to our gate. When we got there the flight was closed. I was pretty sick and after running to the gate I was also quite winded. When I saw the sign, I think I might have had tears on both cheeks, because amazingly enough, the man opened the door and let us get on the plane. I was shocked and very grateful.

Mommy needed the rest of the day to recover after we got to Dayton, so I went out for some last minute shopping with Uncle Scott and Emily stayed at home and played with Grandma. Later that evening, Uncle Scott entertained Emily with his guitar music. She loves to listen to him play.

The next day, on Christmas Eve, we took Emily to see Great Grandma Brown at Brighton Gardens where they were having a Christmas party complete with Santa, carols, cookies and other treats. Emily had a blast and she even sat on Great Grandma's lap for a few minutes. For me, that was the best part. I know Great Grandma did not know her, but she did sort of smile for a minute at one point. I think I lost count of how many times Emily visited Santa, but my mother reports at least 5. She was really taken with Santa.

After Brighton Gardens, we had lunch and then a nap (even Mommy napped). Then we got ready for Christmas Eve dinner - ham, sour cream potatoes, green beans, crescent dinner rolls and more. Of course for Emily Christmas Eve dinner was hot dogs (2), green beans (2 servings) and a dinner roll. She also had a cookie. Then it was time for bath, books and bed. After Emily went to sleep, Uncle Scott, Aunt Karen, Mommy and Grandma headed to church. It was (another) wonderful Christmas Eve.

Christmas #1 - At our house

We celebrated Christmas at our house a week early since Daniel had to work on Christmas again this year. So we had Christmas Eve on December 18. We helped Emily write a letter to Santa, leave out milk and chocolate candy cane cake for Santa and hang up the stockings.
She was very excited. As you can see from the pictures, she must have been on Santa's "nice" list because he brought many presents, including a brand new pink doll house with lots of accessories. Good thing Santa can accomodate some early Christmas stops in his very busy schedule.

On Christmas morning, the first thing Emily asked was whether Santa had come to fill the stockings. It was really cute. When she came down stairs and found all the gifts she looked a little overwhelmed at first, but settled in very quickly and began tearing into everything in sight! Other gifts received included, some new clothes, shoes, books, Dora the Explorer toys, a Viewmaster, Mickey Book and play accessories, and a Little Einstein Rocket. Santa even managed to locate the "pink stick" Emily asked for - in the form of a small pink kalidescope! I would say Christmas at home was a huge success.

Family Photo Shoot

I have been meaning to post these for a while now. We splurged on a family photo shoot this year for our holiday pictures. We went with Christa Hook of Creative Clicks here in Cary and we had a great time. The pictures came out great and she even did our holiday cards for us. The prices were reasonable and we got a ton of pictures. It was fun and we made lots of good memories in the process. I just love family pics!

Gingerbread House

We bought a little gingerbread house kit at Target this weekend so we could help Emily decorate it. We have a little ceramic gingerbread house that plays music and she loves it so she was thrilled to get to make a little house of her very own. I have learned the following from this experience:

1.) Definitely buy the pre-built gingerbread house. Very easy to decorate.

2.) Emily likes the jelly beans.

3.) There is definitely enough frosting to do the entire roof with "snow." Daddy was right. Yes, I just admitted that.

4.) Emily does not like the jelly spearmint leaves.

5.) Build after dinner and make the rest of the candies dessert. Do not let her eat leftover b-day cake and then turn around and eat gingerbread candies. Too much sugar.

6.) Daddy and Emily both threatened to eat the gingerbread house in one bite. See pics.

7.) The little dot candies do not always stick to the frosting right away. Then they roll all over the floor.

8.) Make this an annual tradition. It was fun.

Santa Train 2010!

After the fun was over inside the butterfly house, we took the kids outside to find the Santa Train! The Santa Train took everyone to the North Pole to see Santa, his elves and Rudolph! We even had quite a bit of real snow for our trip! The kids loved all the snow! I was hoping we would get a few flurries, but I never dreamed we would get so much! It really made the event all that much more special. Santa made a stop at each train car to talk to the kids. Emily told Santa that she wanted a pink doll house and a kitten. Not sure where the kitten idea came from, but at least there was no mention of a pink stick this time. All the kids got candy canes from Santa. Emily liked her candy cane. There was pink sticky stuff all over her white coat and mittens when we got home.
At the end of the party all the kids got goodie bags from Emily with a little wooden train, a train whistle, candy, a Santa book and a Santa hat. I think everyone had a great time. Happy Birthday Emily!

Birthday Party!

We had Emily's Birthday Party at the Durham Museum of Life & Science. We had a Santa Train theme. The party was held in a party room in the Butterfly House. The kids played with some bugs and butterflies, did some arts and crafts (decorated christmas trees, made reindeer and put train stickers on a little track) and then ate pizza, cheese puffs and cake! Emily had 5 friends at her party - Alex, Marissa, Sienna, Vanessa and Grace. Poor Sam got sick and could not come. Zoe, Riley and Ellie also could not be there as they were at Disney World. The kids played really well together and had a great time! We even got to go visit all the butterflies in the butterfly house! Then after the party inside was over, we went outside to ride the Santa Train together! These pics only showed the beginning of the fun!
