Last Day of Second Grade!

I can't even believe second grade has come and gone already. This year went so fast. We wrapped up the year with a 1/2 day that was mostly the end of the year awards ceremony. Emily received the Academic Excellence award for getting straight A's all year, in all subjects, for all four quarters. So proud of her!!
Accelerated Reader Swim Party

All the kids that meet their AR reading goal for the year (40 points) get to go to a special swim party right before school ended and tonight was the night. The Bible Center kids basically took over the South Charleston rec center pool. I think the best part of the night for Emily (in addition to swimming with friends) was getting to wear the mermaid tail she got for Christmas for the very first time. Emily agreed that it was definitely worth reading all her points - and then some! She earned 129.9 points!!

Earth Layers Project

The last school project of the year was a science project - the layers of the Earth. We googled many different project ideas including using clay, Styrofoam balls and even cake. But when we came across the Lego idea, that was it. She was sold. And I think it came out pretty awesome. Her teacher must have agreed because she got a 100%.

Farewell to a Sugar Plum

Sadly, one of the members of #TeamSugarPlum is moving to Lexington, KY later this month. Eden was one of the older girls in the Sugar Plum group and Emily really liked her. She has a nice family and she is a good little skater too. The girls got together today in the party room at Las Trancas to wish Eden well as she moves on to other adventures. She plans to join the skating club in Lexington and we hope to see her at competitions some day.
Everything was going along just like any normal party composed of self-respecting individuals, but then this happened... Thank goodness we had the party room. Love these girls.

Field Day

The kids lucked out again this year with pretty good weather for Field Day. Emily looks forward to this day of nothing but games all year and today it was finally here. The kids did races, tug-of-war, threw balls, played basketball, laughed, played and so much more.
Emily's class won a ribbon for a water game they played and Emily got a third place ribbon in the spoon race (carrying an egg on a spoon). A good time was had by all!

Hawk's Nest Trip

Today was the second grade class trip to Hawk's Nest State Park. Every child had to have a parent go along, so I went. I was initially not thrilled with the idea since I am not very outdoorsy, but it was pretty fun.
The first thing on our Hawk's Nest Agenda was to ride the tram down to the bottom of the New River Gorge. I had kind of pictured a tram as something more like a bus, so this was a welcome surprise!
When we got to the bottom, the kids had some time to look around and visit the nature center. Then it was time for a speed boat ride down the New River to the New River Gorge Bridge! That was fun! Emily and Ashton rode in the very front seats and I rode in the very back. But all seats had a great view and the ride was great!
After the river ride, it was time for a short hike. The kids liked seeing the water falls, looking down on the river and just generally running all over the trails.

After our tramming, boating and hiking, it was time for lunch! We could have packed picnics, but instead a bunch of us loaded up cars and drove into Fayetteville to go to Pies-N-Pints for pizza and playground time. The kids had a blast playing and the grown ups enjoyed spending time together catching up and just talking. Not the world's most educational field trip, but it sure was fun.

Spring Figure Skating Show

In addition to this being Mother's Day, it was also Emily's spring ice skating show. She was able to skate with the same group she skated with in December - the Sugar Plums - only this time they skated to "Dancin' Queen."
It was fun seeing how much better the girls had gotten over the past 5 months. They are such a great group of girls and really seem to genuinely like each other. Emily got to do some of the skills she has been working on including a camel spin and a scratch spin. Her spiral was also a lot better in the show this year.
After the show the girls celebrated with group pictures, pictures with their coach, Amanda, lots of "selfies" and cupcakes. They had a great time and they did a great show! #TeamSugarPlum!

Lost Teeth!

Before we left for the Bahamas, Emily had three teeth that were VERY loose - one on the bottom and both of her front teeth too. I thought for sure she would lose them when we were away. I was partly right. She did lose the one on the bottom while we were gone. But, gratefully, the top ones waited until we got home. We had a nice quiet morning followed by lunch and a trip to the Pottery Place where we painted Zoey on a tile. It was a family effort! And I am so glad I got this last pic of her with all her baby teeth!
When we got home, Emily wanted to pull one of the front ones because it was so loose it was starting to bleed and cause her some real trouble eating. She couldn't quite get it out, but Daddy got it! Then once that one was out, she wanted the other one out too. So, just like that, no front teeth!!! I am totally in love with this toothless smile...and so is she. She asks me to look to make sure the new ones aren't come in yet.

Atlantis (part 3)
April 23-29, 2016
Several of our nights at the resort, we went out for nice dinners. We tried out Nobu (Japanese); Bahamian Club (steak); Olives (Mediterranean) and Cafe Martinique (French). Our favorite was Cafe Martinique for sure. Nobu was a close second (oh the sea bass...) followed by Olives and then Bahamian Club.
One of our evenings, we hit up a "quick service" diner in Marina Village and then went to the evening show. It was a magic show by famous illusionist Rob Lake. At first I worried that it would be a little cheesy, but it was actually really, really cool. I would go again.
And afterward? Back to Ben & Jerry's of course. It was a super fun trip. We can't wait to go back next year with Emily.

One of our evenings, we hit up a "quick service" diner in Marina Village and then went to the evening show. It was a magic show by famous illusionist Rob Lake. At first I worried that it would be a little cheesy, but it was actually really, really cool. I would go again.
Atlantis (part 2)

In addition to awesome pools, Atlantis had a ton of different activities that included animals. We walked the property several times just to admire all the fish and other marine friends that call Atlantis home. Of course my favorite was Dolphin Cay. We did not go on this trip because we really want to take Emily to swim with the dolphins next year. Maybe the sea lions too. We'll see.
We also really enjoyed Marina Village. We visited a couple of times during the day just to walk around which was great because it was never crowded.
We also went to Marina Village every night to go to Ben & Jerry's where we discovered Tonight Dough in a chocolate dipped waffle cone. Oh my!!!!
