Last Day of Kindergarten

Tuesday, May 19, 2014

How can it be?  I thought she just started Kindergarten?  Graduation is tonight and Emily is so excited!

Dentist

Tuesday, May 19, 2014

Well, she finally did it!  She got a full teeth cleaning at the dentist!  We have made several trips to the dentist, both in WV and in NC, but the dentist has never actually cleaned her teeth.  They just looked.  But this time, they actually cleaned her teeth and Emily did great!  Go Emily!

Stonewall Jackson Resort

Saturday, May 17, 2014

I had to attend the Annual Meeting for the Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia this year up at Stonewall Jackson Resort.  It is only about 90 minutes from Charleston and it is very nice.  I like to go there.  The meeting ended late on Friday afternoon so we decided to make a family weekend of it.  Daniel and Emily drove up to meet me on Friday evening.  It was kind of late when they arrived but we got an early start on Saturday morning with a quick break breakfast followed by a swim in the indoor pool.

Then we headed outside to check out a little playground and the pier onto Stonewall Jackson Lake.  After that, we braved a short trip on the rental bikes.  Emily tried out a bike of her own and then Emily and Daddy tried a tandem bike.  It was a little too big for Emily, but she was brake and gave it a go.
After lunch, we took a ride on the Little Sorrell out on the lake.  It is a big pontoon boat and Emily loved it.  Mommy Daddy loved it too because we had a chance to really kick back and relax a bit in the warm sun, on a boat, on the lake.  Ahhhh.
We had a very nice dinner at Stillwaters restaurant and then bought a S'mores kit to take to the fire pit area. That was my favorite part of the trip, I think. I love these pics of Emily sporting her S'mores kit on the walk to the fire pit.

Emily toasted marshmallows.  Mommy and Daddy toasted marshmallows too.  It might have only been a one day trip, but it was a lot of fun.  I would definitely do it again.  Oh.  Wait.  We kind of are.  We will be staying here again in December when we ride Polar Express and do breakfast with Santa!  YAY!

Dance Recital 2014

Saturday, May 10, 2014

Emily and Reagan danced together again this year at January's. They did a ballet/tap class again with Ms. Jaime.  The class was a lot smaller this year - down to just about 8 kids.  They did a cute number with a kind of 1950's theme mostly centered on the one little boy in the class.  I was disappointed that this year's costume was so similar to last years.  This year was blue with black and white polka dots and last year's was black and white polka dots with hot pink.  Very similar.
The steps in this year's routine were much easier which meant that we did not have to do dance boot camp two nights a week at our house practicing to a video shot with my phone during class.  That was nice. It also meant that the kids seemed to enjoy it a little more. Emily even smiled a REAL smile during the show!  Glad I had the camera ready!

After the show Emily got flowers, a treat bag and her very first "twirl dress" (like Abby's).  And of course we celebrated with cake too!

As a post-script to this post, Emily did not want to sign up for dance again this fall.  So sign-ups came and went a few weeks ago without my favorite little dancer on the roster.  Reagan has moved on to a new studio. So I guess that is the end of the Emily/Reagan dance years.  Sigh... Emily has decided to focus her efforts on gymnastics, Wednesday evening church and possibly swimming lessons in the fall.  And so begins a new era... Wonder what this year will bring?

Hedgehog Encounter

Sunday, May 4, 2014

Emily and Abby are becoming fast friends.  It helps, of course, that they live 2 houses down and that Dan and I love Abby's parents (Molly and Paul).  Anyway, a few weeks ago, Molly adopted a hedgehog at an exotic pet show.  It had been attempting to get acclimated to its new home for a weeks before we got the chance to visit and meet him.  His name is Peterson.  Abby named him.  He was way, way more prickley than I imagined and they really do curl up into a little ball when they get scared.  They also hiss when they get mad, just in case you were wondering.  They are also nocturnal, something else I did not realize.  Anyway, Peterson came out to visit with Abby and Emily for a little while.  He did ok after he warmed up to the girls a bit and he finally un-curled himself.
As a post-script, due to Peterson's need for nighttime entertainment, Molly and Paul recently found Peterson a new home with a family that is up a little more at night.  So I am glad we visited when we did!  He really was pretty cute.

Gymnastics Party

Saturday, May 3, 2014

I had been doing so good keeping up with my blogging and then came the end of the school year.  Wow was it crazy!  Just wait until I get all these posts caught up May 3 - June 21.  You'll see.  Ugh.  Anyway, here we go.
I post this birthday party mostly because I had the chance to see Emily's gymnastics skills up close and personal (to some extent).  At Maverick's I mostly have to sit upstairs, at a distance.  Anyway this was our neighbor Abby's party and Emily had a blast.  She tried out all of the equipment and even did a pretty good vault!  She was fearless jumping to the high bar and loved jumping off the tall mats into the foam pit.

Field Day 2014

Friday, May 2, 2014

Emily, Grace, Gracie, Kyra and Jenna
Today was field day at Bible Center School.  I recall field day as a child and it was one of my favorite days of the year!  All play and no work and the weather for the kids this year could not have been better.  It was sunny and about 60 degrees.  The kids had a blast!

Among the many games included in field day fun were sack races, tug-of-war, 40 yard dash, frisbee and football throwing and two bounce houses. They also enjoyed arts and crafts, face painting and more.  It was a great day!

Awana Awards Night

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

Tonight was awards night for Awana at Bible Center Church.  Thanks to some hard work over spring break (thank you Grandma Heintz) and a little more work during the first couple of days back to school Emily was able to finish her first workbook!  It was a pretty big accomplishment since she did not start going consistently until January.  We were very proud of her work...and she was very proud of herself too.  In her words, "I love God."  It does not get better than that.  Great job, Emily.

When I Grow Up Day

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

Today was "what I want to be when I grow up" day in Emily's Kindergarten class.  They had given us a few weeks notice for this big day so Emily and I talked and talked about it.  It made me remember when she was little (well, littler) and she wanted to be a fairy.  I also remember when she was almost three and wore her fairy wings and dress to preschool for picture day.   Anyway, we talked about it and she decided she wanted to be an adventurer.  Someone who could go to far away places and see new things and, well, go on adventures.

Feed the Ducks

Sunday, April 27, 2014
The weather was just fabulous this weekend and we could not resist a trip to the park to feed the ducks and have a picnic. There were many, many more people than ducks and geese on this visit so finding any friends to feed was a challenge, but we did finally come up with a few takers.  We wrapped up our visit with a trip to the playground and a stop for ice cream at Baskin Robbins on the way home.  It was a good Sunday. I love family time.
