Christmas Eve

 Thursday, December 24, 2020

'Twas the night before Christmas...and we needed something festive to do, but everything was closed due to Covid, so what is a family to do?  Well, sign up for a virtual holiday cooking decorating class of course!  We spent the morning wrapping the last of the gifts and putting bows on and then after lunch, we started preparing for our class - by making sugar cookie dough! And yes, we made a mess.  But it almost made it that much more fun.

Then at 3:00pm, we signed on to Sur La Table for our class.  We started by learning the proper way to chill dough before rolling it out, getting the cookie cutters ready and getting them in the oven!

Then we made the royal icing (which we decided to flavor with almond instead of vanilla for a new flavor) and we learned everything we could about decorating.  We learned several wet-on-wet techniques and unfortunately we also overflowed a half a bag of green icing!  Oops.  You can see it coming out of the top of the bag and onto the counter in the picture in the bottom left.  Poor Grandma.

Even without half a bag of green frosting we still had plenty more to finish almost 3 dozen cookies!  Some of them came out really, really pretty!  I can also report (as can Grandma and Emily) that they were also VERY tasty.  The cookie was really buttery and the almond gave the icing a nice flavor.

By the time we finished cookie baking and decorating, it was time for dinner (manicotti and garlic bread).  Guess what was for dessert?  Then it was time for Daniel's annual reading of The Night Before Christmas...she hasn't outgrown it yet...before heading off to bed to wait for the man in red!  Hurry Santa!  Hurry!

Merry Christmas Eve!
